She pushed the branch aside, only to find more behind it. She'd only been in this mess for a few minutes now, but already she knew she wasn't made for it. She was a city girl, the last person in the world who should be pushing her way through a jungle. She was a King's Scribe, by Terren'kal. This was the first time she'd ever been outside of a city in her life, and already she knew it was a bad idea.

But she had to find him. It was ridiculous, it was foolish....it was law.

It was more than that, of course. The law originated somehow, and this was the reason, this was why it was the highest law, obeyed by all.

And the law was this, that the bonds of the Nakita'dai took precedence over all. No one could be forcibly separated from their Truest. They could, of course, be willingly separated, but who would ever willingly be separated from any dai, especially their Truest.

There was a movement in the brush, a shift in the darkness. A silken blackness against the night sky.

She pushed forward eagerly, sure it was him, sure that this was where she belonged, until....

A roar, darkness blurring, the rake of claws down the arm she lifts to protect her face. A wild beast, vile, horrible, coming for her, and in that instant she knows she will die.

In that instant, she knows she should never have come. Knows she does not belong here. Knows she will die. Knows all this, but still, what other choice could she have made?

A second darkness meets the first, drives it away, and her panting, ragged breaths continue for another few seconds. She looks and see he has come. A fine, black, silky creature, coming to her rescue, tearing into her attacker, driving it away.

With tears in her eyes she goes to him. Tears of pain, both physical and emotional, tears of longing for the differences in species that separates them.

He licks at the blood on her arm, then at the tears from her eyes. He nuzzles close to her, comforting her, holding her. Nothing matters, no difference matters, they are together once again, whatever the price, whatever the circumstances.

There is a reason it is law.
